Our main thermal spray processes include detonation spraying, flame spraying, arc spraying, plasma spraying, and high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying.
Detonation Spraying
This is a proprietary process invented by Praxair Surface Technologies. Gas and powder are combined in a controlled explosion and then supersonically sprayed onto components. Common materials used include tungsten carbide, chromium carbide, metal alloys, ceramics, and cermet.
Flame Spraying
This process is cost-effective and can be easily implemented in workshops or on-site. Also known as "oxy/acetylene combustion spraying," it is one of the earliest thermal spray technologies developed over 100 years ago. Oxygen and fuel gases (such as acetylene, propane, or propylene) are fed into a spray gun and ignited to create a flame. Wire or powder can be fed into the flame to melt and then spray onto the workpiece. Materials that can be applied using flame spraying include stainless steel, nickel, aluminum oxide, Hastelloy alloys, tin, and Babbitt alloy (a tin-based alloy).
Arc Spraying
In this process, two wires make contact at the nozzle simultaneously. When an electrical load is placed on the wires, their tips melt upon contact. Atomizing gas like air or nitrogen is used to remove the molten material from the wires and deposit it onto the workpiece. Arc spraying is cost-effective and easy to use on-site. Its low particle velocity allows for maximum coating thickness with any specified material. Materials commonly applied using arc spraying include stainless steel, Hastelloy alloys, aluminum oxide nickel, zinc, aluminum, and bronze.
Plasma Spraying
Plasma spraying is often considered the most versatile thermal spray process. Throughout the operation, gases such as argon and hydrogen pass through the spray gun. The gases are decomposed and ionized by an arc. The atomic constituents recombine after passing through the nozzle, releasing a significant amount of heat. Plasma core temperatures typically exceed 10,000 °C, surpassing the average melting temperature of any material. Powder is injected into the plasma jet stream where it melts and is projected onto the workpiece.
High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) Spraying
This relatively new process has expanded the applications of thermal spray into previously unattainable areas. In HVOF spraying, gas fuel (such as hydrogen) or liquid fuel (such as kerosene) is mixed with oxygen and burnt in a combustion chamber at high pressure. Due to supersonic gas velocities, powder is injected into the flame and heated rapidly, resulting in very dense coatings compared to other available thermal spray methods. HVOF technology is the preferred technique for thermal spraying wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant carbides, as well as Hastelloy alloys, Tribaloy alloys, and Inconel alloys
