Hastelloy B is a nickel-based alloy that belongs to the Hastelloy family of alloys. It is composed primarily of nickel, with significant amounts of molybdenum and a small percentage of iron. Hastelloy B offers good resistance to various corrosive environments, including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid. It also provides resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
Hastelloy B is commonly used in applications where resistance to reducing acids is required, such as chemical processing, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. It finds use in equipment such as reactors, valves, pumps, and piping systems that are exposed to corrosive environments. However, it is important to note that Hastelloy B may not be suitable for oxidizing environments or applications involving oxidizing acids.
While Hastelloy B has been widely used in the past, it has been largely superseded by the improved version, Hastelloy B2, which offers enhanced corrosion resistance and improved fabricability. Therefore, when considering a nickel-based alloy for corrosion resistance, Hastelloy B2 is generally recommended over Hastelloy B.
